Best Video Game System For Kids?

Kids have so many choices these days! There are so many games they can play, and there are many platforms they can use. These include a personal computer (PC) and the numerous devices designed especially for gaming. The game consoles include small portable devices, and larger ones suitable for home use.

There are many different kinds of games available. Some are educational, and others are pure entertainment. The technology has advanced so far that today's games can be extremely realistic. Some of the content is not suitable for kids to view. Fortunately we are aided in the quest for appropriate games by a rating system that helps us choose wisely. Also, some of the modern game consoles include parental controls that let us regulate things like content and usage periods.

In the early days in the development of video game systems, we had the Atari video game system. It offered wholesome games such as Pac-Man or Space Invaders. At first the number of available games was not great, and these were only fun and wholesome games devoid of adult or inappropriate content.

Best Video Game System For Kids?

Your PC

Your personal computer (PC) may be able to play many of the thousands of PC games available. If you already have a PC, this may be the best platform. However, it's also good to learn about the modern systems dedicated to game play, as they do provide an incredible gaming experience in some cases not available from a PC.

Modern Consoles

Now there is a large selection of video game systems that offer an incredibly wide selection of games. The systems include the Sony PlayStation 2 and 3, the Nintendo GameCube and DS (and variants), and the Microsoft Xbox and Xbox 360. These video game systems can use any computer monitor or modern wide-screen TV for video display.

Low Cost System

If you have very young kids, and want to get a video game system at low price, you could look for a used Nintendo GameCube console. There are plenty of games for that unit rated E for everyone, and suitable for very young children. Your tots will love it, and you can always get a more expensive console later on as your kids grow older.

Portable Platforms

If you are interested in a portable game platform, you may want to check out the Sony PlayStation Portable, or PSP. Other options are the Nintendo DS or DS Lite or DSi. These portable video game systems offer good selection of games, but of course the screens are quite small.

If you are concerned about your parental responsibility, you may be glad to learn that some of the modern gaming systems include parental controls. The Nintendo DS and DS Lite both use access code systems so that parents can control downloads, Internet access, and photo sharing.

Consoles for Home Use

For home use, the more modern consoles include the Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) and the Nintendo Wii. These are currently the leaders in modern video game systems for the home.

Xbox 360

There are over 500 games available for the Xbox 360. Online play is available through a subscription service called "Xbox 360 Live". Some games have a multiplayer online mode. There are many accessories available for the Xbox 360, including gaming automobile steering wheel and pedals, guitar and other musical instruments, dance pad, and auxiliary cooling systems (some Xbox 360 units have experienced problems with overheating).

The Xbox 360 can play movies from multiple sources, and offers parental controls called Family Settings to allow control over the types of games and films that kids can play or view, based on content ratings. It also allows control of the types of interaction on Xbox 360 Live service. Note that the default Family Settings are for full access, so you will need to configure it for your kids.

PS3

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) also has multimedia capabilities, including DVD and Blu-ray Disc, and allows online play through the free PlayStation Network. There are at least 400 games available, and the same kinds of accessories as described above for Xbox 360.

The PS3 and PSP have parental controls that restrict the types of games that can be played and downloaded, as well as video content that can be viewed.

Wii

The Nintendo Wii started a revolution in gaming systems with its wireless remote, called the Wii Remote or Wiimote. It can be used as a handheld pointing device and detects movement in three dimensions. This provides a superior level of interactivity that translates into lots of fun! In 2007 the Wii Fit game let parents see that video gaming could involve giving the kids some exercise! Now there are more than 500 games for the Wii, and by connecting multiple controllers up to 4 people can play a game (for certain games designed for that). Online play is available through the free Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Again, the accessories described for the Xbox 360 are also available for the Wii.

The Wii offers parental controls for game playing and Internet use (content and messaging). Game playing settings use age ratings.

Game Selection

You pretty much can't go wrong when choosing one of the modern video game systems like Xbox 360 or PS3. Be aware that some games are available across multiple game systems, but some are only available on a specific one. That may be a consideration if your kid is really intent on playing a particular game that can only be played on one of the console systems!

PS3 - Yellow Light of Death - Causes and Solutions

When the PlayStation 3 came out one of the big advantages it had compared to Xbox 360 was very low failure rate. If you know only a little bit about consoles you probably heard of the Red Ring of Death error which affected as many as 30% of the first Xbox 360 models. Believe it or not Sony did not learn from Microsoft's mistake and the Yellow Light of Death is a PlayStation version of the Red Ring of Death. It also occurs due to the exact same reason as the Red Ring of Death.

So what causes the RROD on Xbox 360 and YLOD on the PS3? The answer is overheating and poor design of cooling and chip attachment to the motherboard. These two flaws combined have catastrophic results and kill the console over time. Both consoles are extremely powerful but have too small casings with poor ventilation and release of excess of heat. After playing your PS3 for few hours what happens is the temperature rises a point where the solder joints attaching the CPU and GPU chips to the motherboard liquefy and then solidify again once you switch the console off.

These heating cycles put stress on the solder joints and make them weaker and at a point, sooner or later one of the hundreds of solder joints breaks and the motherboard loses connection to the chip (either processor or graphical chip). At this point your PS3 will show the yellow light of death to notify you of the problem.

PS3 - Yellow Light of Death - Causes and Solutions

Now that you know what causes the problem lets talk about your options to get your PS3 running again.

Option 1: If your console is still under warranty call the Sony customer service line (800-345-7669) and tell them what happened. You will have to send them your PS3 for repair or they will send you a refurbished one. It's completely free but you will have to pay the shipping and insurance and wait for few weeks to get your PS3 back.

Option 2: If your PlayStation 3 is no longer under warranty you can still send it to Sony for repair. But they will charge your 0 + shipping and insurance and you will only get a 3 months extended warranty on the repaired or refurbished PS3. So if something goes wrong with it and the yellow light of death comes back after this period you can prepare another 0 and forget about gaming for weeks again. I do not recommend this option because it's a waste of money.

Option 3: Don't feel like giving Sony 0 to fix a problem THEY CAUSED? You don't have to! You can fix your PS3 at home yourself. No need to waste hundreds of dollars (it cost you enough to buy the PS3) or having to wait for weeks. If you think fixing a PS3 requires a tech savvy person or special tools you are wrong. People who never took anything apart fixed their PS3's without any problems.

All you have to do is follow a step-by-step video tutorial with commentary which will guide you through the whole process screw by screw and you could be playing your PS3 TODAY!

5 Most Popular Types of Computer Software (And What They Do)

As the publisher of a software information website, I often use keyword-research tools* to determine which software-related topics are the most popular (based on Internet search activity). By knowing what people are looking for online, I can build content to help them.

You can't help but notice trends and patterns when doing this kind of research, and I thought you might be interested in some of those trends. For example, in this article I've compiled five of the most popular types of software in the world, based on how often people look them up through Google, Yahoo, MSN and the other search engines.

#1 - Anti-virus Tools

5 Most Popular Types of Computer Software (And What They Do)

For a long time, I've had a conspiracy theory that the companies that make anti-virus programs are in league with the people who create computer viruses in the first place. After all, few things sell anti-virus software like the constant threat of new viruses. Regardless of who's generating the fear, they are doing a good job of it, because anti-virus software is consistently one of the most frequently searched programs.

Most people computer users are very familiar with these programs, because they come pre-installed on most PCs. There is also a dizzying array of software products that fall into this category, so I won't try to summarize them here. That's another article entirely.

#2 - Tax Software

Okay, so there's a very good chance this one made the list because I conducted my research at tax time (in March). Perhaps if I conducted this study later in the year, tax software would not be quite as popular from a search engine usage standpoint. At any rate, it makes the cut today and falls in right behind the anti-virus programs based on the number of searches.

I use these programs every year at tax time. Or, to be honest, I should say my wife uses these programs while I provide moral support. At any rate, these software products are incredibly useful for people who prepare their own tax returns.

Though each program offers slightly different features, they all perform the same basic function. They walk you step by step through the process of completing your tax-return forms. You just fill in the blanks with the requested information, and the software does the rest. Popular tax software programs include TaxAct, TurboTax and TaxCut (by H&R Block).

#3 - Accounting Software

This type of computer program might be high on the list of Internet search for two reasons. For one thing, it's very versatile and can be used by professional accountants, small business owners, and others. Secondly, there are terminology reasons for the Internet search popularity of this software. Some people use the phrase "accounting" when referring to the tax-preparation programs mentioned previously, while others use the phrase when referring to the more full-featured programs used by professional accountants.

Regardless of these semantic differences, accounting software is commonly searched through the major search engines, so it makes my list. These programs are most often used to manage the revenue and expenses of a company, including payroll and corporate tax information.

#4 - DVD Burning Tools

As the name suggests, these software programs allow you to reproduce or "burn" copies of DVDs. Of course, these tools also open a Pandora's box of legal issues, because you cannot just make copies of a commercial DVD without violating copyright laws.

But this is not a legal lesson -- it's a list of popular software types as measured by Internet search patters. And by that yardstick DVD burning programs certainly make the list.

#5 - Video Editing Programs

These software tools allow you to edit video sequences on a computer. You don't even need a fancy computer to use them, but just a regular old desktop unit (as long as its compatible with the software program you choose).

These products have become increasingly popular over the years, thus creating an army of amateur filmmakers. To use them, you would first create the video footage itself. Then you would use this unique and powerful software to edit the footage on any compatible desktop computer. You can import and export video to and from your computer, cut and paste sections of video, and add special effects and transitions.

* Sources: KeywordTracker and Keyword Discovery. I cross-referenced the most common software types from both tools to create this list.

Long Term Effects of Concussions

A concussion is a traumatic head injury that can occur due to a mild or severe blow to the head. Often times, a head injury can appear mild. However, research indicates that there are serious, long-term effects of concussions. In addition, cumulative concussions from repeated head injuries have long-term consequences.

A recent study done on the effects of concussions in high school athletes discovered that even the less severe concussions can have long lasting effects, especially if the athlete goes back to playing too soon, or has a history of head injuries.

What Happens When A Concussion Occurs?

Long Term Effects of Concussions

Under normal circumstances, the brain floats in a protective pool of spinal fluid within the skull. However, certain events like a car accident or hard tackle can cause the brain to slam into the interior walls of the skull. Depending on the intensity of the injury and the brains ability to realign, the damage can be mild to severe. Most people will recover from a mild concussion within just a few hours, yet a more severe injury may cause symptoms for a number of weeks.

For the first few minute following a head injury, the affected party may experience a loss of consciousness, dizziness, uneven dilation of the pupils or weakness to one side of the body. In some cases, the injured individual may feel nauseated or break out in convulsions.

When Symptoms Remain

When the concussion is mild to moderate, the symptoms will dissipate within a few hours with rest. The person may still have problems with orientation or vision, but over time, the brain will recover.

However, when the sustained concussion is severe, the individual may experience an extended loss of consciousness, depression, mood swings or even bleeding in the brain. A CT Scan or MRI as soon as possible following the injury will be able to determine the severity of the concussion. Bruising and bleeding of the brain is not always considered life threatening, but undiagnosed conditions can be triggered in the event of a concussion.

Post-Concussion Syndrome

About fifteen percent of individuals who suffer a concussion experience post-concussion syndrome, with symptoms that may last for weeks after the injury is healed. In some cases, the effects of a concussion can last for a year or longer.

The reasons for post-concussion syndrome are not clear to doctors and medical researchers. No correlations between the severity of the injury and the development of post-concussion syndrome have been found. In fact, a number of researchers believe that post-concussion syndrome is entirely psychological. However, others argue that there is definitely a medical cause for the condition, even though such a cause remains unidentified.

Post-concussion syndrome tends to be somewhat more prevalent among older individuals, making age an identifiable factor for the condition. In addition, women also seem to be more at risk for being affected by the syndrome than men are.

Essentially, the symptoms of post-concussion syndrome are the same as the symptoms of a concussion that last beyond the first couple of weeks following a head injury. Post-concussion syndrome symptoms include:

• Changes in mood, such as an increase in irritability
• Changes in memory
• Difficulty sleeping
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Fatigue
• Sensitivity to noise or light

Treating post-concussion syndrome begins with the treatment of the initial concussion. If you lose consciousness following a head injury, you are likely to have a concussion. If the symptoms of the concussion have not passed within a few weeks, your doctor may decide to do a follow-up MRI test to determine why the injury has not healed completely.

Often times, the severity of a head injury is underestimated. Therefore, it makes good sense to pay a visit to your doctor if you sustain a head injury that leads to the symptoms of a mild to severe concussion.

Pimpernel Smith For The First Time On DVD, Starring Leslie Howard As Mister V

This storyline might sound somewhat familiar: a resourceful Professor of Archeology struggles against the growing might of pre-war Nazi Germany in a thrilling adventure with the future of the Western world on the line. He's got a very common last name, and is known for his daring bravado. But this isn't a blockbuster from Lucas and Spielberg - in fact, while it might have been the inspiration for the first Indiana Jones movie in 1981, this film came out in 1941!

Forty years before the release of the Raiders of the Lost Ark, English actor Leslie Howard released a movie he had produced and directed with his own funds, generated from his role in the Hollywood blockbuster Gone With The Wind(1939), in which he played the character that will always be associated with him: honor-bound intellectual Southern gentleman Ashley Wilkes.

Howard was passionate about the war effort, and was concerned with alerting a wider audience to the growing threat of Nazi Germany. Howard also desired to produce a film that would update his famous role as Sir Percy Blakeney in The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934) from Revolutionary France to pre-World War II Europe. The result was an amazing feature film entitled Pimpernel Smith (1941), known as Mister V in the USA.

Pimpernel Smith For The First Time On DVD, Starring Leslie Howard As Mister V

Howard played the title role of Professor Horatio Smith, who uses his cover as an absent-minded professor of archeology to smuggle victims of persecution out of the Nazi state. During one such daring adventure, he is wounded, revealing his secret to his admiring students, who enthusiastically join him in his struggle. But things are complicated when one of his students brings a mysterious woman into their inner circle. Smith engages in a game of cat-and-mouse with his ruthless Nazi adversary who has been assigned to track him down.

The film is even credited with inspiring Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish humanitarian, who in 1942 attended a private screening of Howard's latest film with his sister Nina. 'On the way home,' his sister recalled, 'he told me this was the kind of thing he would like to do.' Wallenberg went on to mount a rescue operation in Budapest that, conservatively estimated, saved 15,000 Hungarian Jews from Hitler's gas chambers. It is doubtful whether any other movie has ever inspired an act of heroism on quite this scale.
